Life is a big party, but you have to have to hang up the decorations yourself!
For a long time, I worked for a large restaurant chain. I really enjoyed working there. Every day, we were busy preparing fresh, local, healthy, natural and, above all, delicious food. Something that still makes me very happy.
After that, I ended up in the Christmas and promotional gifts industry and was shocked by the amount of waste this industry generated. Lots of plastic, lots of products that serve no purpose whatsoever and are basically just thrown away. I really missed doing something “good” that I could be proud of. In addition, I had always had the dream of starting my own business one day (when I grew up)...
In 2018, my best friend died in a tragic accident. We had shared everything together throughout our lives. After her death, I felt a strong need to give my life more meaning. But the big question was, how? A few months later, I received a text message from Jolanda asking if I wanted to start a business with her. After dinner and a cup of coffee, we had made up our minds, and that was the beginning of Gifts with Impact. We would no longer add to waste but would collaborate with small and medium-sized Dutch social entrepreneurs who only use products made from recycled, natural or organic materials. And we wanted even more! Our own gift card that would give us a platform to showcase lots of Dutch fair trade and sustainable brands. This would allow us to introduce as many people as possible to these brands. The result was Gift for Good – the sustainable gift card from our own soil.

After 20 years, I decided to close my business selling promotional gifts and Christmas hampers. I wanted to do something completely different. I was completely fed up with the industry and all its plastic waste. For a year, I tried all sorts of things and took endless walks with my dog to figure out what I wanted to do next. I was a mentor for Start Up Bootcamp, planned to run a small dairy business, source products, set up an app for camping sites, develop a new water bottle, and helped set up small businesses in my neighbourhood. But you can't fight your nature. With my knowledge, skills, and network, I was called upon several times and decided to return to this industry, but with a completely different approach. I was grateful and wanted to give something back to society. I set up several sustainable businesses and sold them again because they became too big and needed a different approach, such as GreenGiftBox and EcoGiving. I became a member of Social Enterprise.nl and in this way came into contact with even more social entrepreneurs who told their stories.
I completed the Social Entrepreneurship programme at Nyenrode Business University and was surprised by the effort they put into obtaining subsidies and the energy they invested in raising funds. They found it very difficult to sell their products to the business community. I wanted to bridge the gap between these two worlds by helping them sell their products and tell their stories. Martine crossed my path and had the same mission and drive. After first founding Gifts with Impact, we have now also launched the Gift for Good card based on our expertise.
My mission is to help make the industry more sustainable, because there are still a lot of plastic products on offer.
