Out of extreme poverty in 100 weeks
We are excited to participate in Giving Circle by 100WEEKS because woman for woman fits well with our companies.
We women want to help other women escape poverty and empower them.

On behalf of Gift for Good gift vouchers and Gifts with Impact, I, Jolanda Koedood, have started a group of enterprising women to help 20 women in Rwanda who live in extreme poverty to set up a business.
100WEEKS facilitates enterprising women living in extreme poverty with “direct cash transfers” and support in the form of weekly group training and meetings in a savings fund. Giving money is a proven effective way of combating poverty. It empowers people to determine their own course. By investing in female entrepreneurship, we reach the whole family. For every £1,000, one woman and her entire family can be permanently lifted out of extreme poverty in just 100 weeks!
This could start with growing tomatoes in their gardens and selling them at the market, or even printing flyers and posters and making calls via the internet.
The women who are selected are chosen in consultation with the village chiefs. Which women are suitable for this and will it cause jealousy among the other women? Can they also help the other women in the commune to escape poverty and improve their villages?
100 Weeks donates money, and we try to double that amount.
In Rwanda, you have to deal with many external circumstances such as drought, but also flooding. Small villages are cut off from the internet and telephone networks and suffer from extreme poverty.

Start project
We will be starting this project soon and will first meet the other enterprising Dutch women. Then we will meet the group of women from Rwanda. They will be taken to an office by bus because otherwise there could be problems with the connection.
My motivation is that I am very curious about how things work in developing countries. I know little about this myself, except of course what you hear on the news and what you can imagine yourself. I also have good friends who live there, so I can see the beauty of the landscape and the people who live there.
I am also curious to find out who the women are who have been selected by the commune and the village chief. Of course, this should not cause jealousy in the village, but should instead be an incentive for the commune to improve living conditions.

The women have started their own businesses!
The women have now been participating for a year and have received cash and training for a year and have participated in a savings group for unexpected costs and/or loans.
The results are very positive. It works as follows. The women meet every month. The box containing cash is then opened. They save themselves and receive £8 each time. If they have a good idea for an investment, such as buying a hair dryer or a cassava grinder to prepare a popular local meal and sell it in the evenings, the group considers whether this is a good investment. If so, they are allowed to borrow the money.
Take Primitive, for example.
“Life’s been good”
Primitive has been busy since the start of the 100WEEKS programme. She has started not one, but two businesses: A sewing business, where she not only makes and repairs clothing for the community, but also gives sewing lessons to train local talent.
She has purchased a cassava grinder, which she uses to prepare a popular local meal that she sells in the evenings. With the income from her businesses, she has been able to invest in electricity for her home and send her children to a good school. Her dream is to expand her businesses even further.
